Junior Youth Assembly is a three-day learning opportunity for middle school students, grades 6-8, designed to give participants an experience in the operation of Georgia’s State Government. Legislators meet in committees and in the House and Senate chambers to debate legislation. Students are given an opportunity to discuss current state issues with state administrators.

Volunteers, along with  GCCE Professional staff, help guide the students through mock committee meetings and legislative procedures. Students debate and vote on bills that their fellow delegates have written and presented. Bills that pass in committee are then taken to the floor of the House or Senate for full debate and vote.

After students spend their day debating the solutions to complex issues in the state, they can unwind in the lazy river, or splash, swim, and slide with their whole Chapter. Then dry off and head into the adventure park to delight in dry-land attractions such as the immersive MagiQuest adventure game, arcade games and much more. Students will love the assortment of experiences from debate to a dance party that wraps up the day.  This location offers some serious fun.

Conference Tesimony

I always really enjoy my time at ENGAGE conferences! Everyone there is friendly and welcoming. I have had the opportunity to write a bill, discuss new ideas, and defend my position. It is really fun and I am able to meet new people from all over the state of Georgia. Participating in both JYA and Jr. GUNA has provided me with new opportunities as a student this year!

The Junior Youth Assembly program from the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement not only develops essential critical reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in middle school students, but also provides them with invaluable insight into how the Georgia General Assembly makes laws. This transformative experiences lays the foundation for these young citizens to become active participants in government at local, state, and national levels, empowering them to find their civic voice and make meaningful contributions to our democracy for years to come.
